Google is watching me - Part III.

The reception area was, predictably, decorated in Google’s funky decor: from the multicoloured chairs you weren’t exactly sure how to sit on, to the lava lamps churning away in Google’s colours. Behind the receptionist on the wall was a giant Google logo and projected over the top was a real time scrolling list of searches (apparently unfiltered). It was an awkward silent moment or two for the receptionist as she tried to attract my attention by waving her hands in the air and shouting loudly.

Ethics for Engineers and Computer Scientists - Part I.

As a part of Professional Engineering in Practice (PEP) we are going to learn about ethics as it relates to engineering. The concepts apply to computer science. Heres a short summary of the lecture lead by Nin Kirkham of UWA. The objective here is to teach professionals about ethical thinking as a part of decision making.

Google is watching me - Part II.

In my holidays I’d gotten to see some of the fruits of my 35 graduate applications made earlier in the year. The demand is high, yes, but for skilled labour, not us university grads. Especially not those who are travelling to Europe for a month, or 8. Employers love well rounded graduates, as long as they get well rounded in their own time.

Some graduates, the really well loved ones, actually get an upfront bonus, free plane tickets and a pat on the ass in return for a signature on a 2 year contract. Not me though.

We need another Y2K.

Of the few units I have this semester, I think Project Engineering Practice is going to be one of the better ones. For a start, it has no exam - but more than this, its an industry oriented unit. It’s focused on making us better more productive engineers.

Google is watching me - Part I.

I’ve been making an attempt to be environmentally-friendly/green/eco-responsible recently, whatever you call it. I’ve been driving better, exercising and studying in my free time. The self improvement isn’t due to increased social responsibility, self esteem or motivation. Its not peer opinion and isn’t even financially driven.

It’s because Google is watching me.
