Ethics for Engineers and Computer Scientists - Part III.

My girlfriend is a deontological thinker. I, hower, am utilitarian. Dont get me wrong - neither of us are puritans in any sense of the word. We just have conflicting morals. Today’s discussion draws parallels that she and I have raised against each others thinking:

We begin this episode aboard the Mignonette a yacht making the 15000 mile voyage from Southhampton to Sydney. The year is 1884. The occupants of the leisure craft are under some considerable distress, however, after a rouge wave washed away the lee bulwarks. The crew of four (Tom Dudley, the captain; Edwin Stephens; Edmund Brooks; and cabin boy Richard Parker) quickly abandon the ship in favour of the lifeboat, having bought nothing but themselves and two tins of turnips onboard.

Starved for thought? Watch TV.

I’ve been thinking of business ideas that will allow me to work from home or at the very least provide me with an alternate source of revenue.

Google Ad’s are great but you need content to drive people to your site. More so, this content has to be fresh and constantly changing. This is a problem, I dont, at this stage, want to invest any more time into anything else. I’d like to develop something and watch it (for the most part) grow by itself.

Every now and then you see something on the internet that you’re not really sure you want to look at.

Google is watching me - Part III.

The reception area was, predictably, decorated in Google’s funky decor: from the multicoloured chairs you weren’t exactly sure how to sit on, to the lava lamps churning away in Google’s colours. Behind the receptionist on the wall was a giant Google logo and projected over the top was a real time scrolling list of searches (apparently unfiltered). It was an awkward silent moment or two for the receptionist as she tried to attract my attention by waving her hands in the air and shouting loudly.

As a part of Professional Engineering in Practice (PEP) we are going to learn about ethics as it relates to engineering. The concepts apply to computer science. Heres a short summary of the lecture lead by Nin Kirkham of UWA. The objective here is to teach professionals about ethical thinking as a part of decision making.

In my holidays I’d gotten to see some of the fruits of my 35 graduate applications made earlier in the year. The demand is high, yes, but for skilled labour, not us university grads. Especially not those who are travelling to Europe for a month, or 8. Employers love well rounded graduates, as long as they get well rounded in their own time.

Some graduates, the really well loved ones, actually get an upfront bonus, free plane tickets and a pat on the ass in return for a signature on a 2 year contract. Not me though.

We need another Y2K.

Of the few units I have this semester, I think Project Engineering Practice is going to be one of the better ones. For a start, it has no exam - but more than this, its an industry oriented unit. It’s focused on making us better more productive engineers.

Google is watching me - Part I.

I’ve been making an attempt to be environmentally-friendly/green/eco-responsible recently, whatever you call it. I’ve been driving better, exercising and studying in my free time. The self improvement isn’t due to increased social responsibility, self esteem or motivation. Its not peer opinion and isn’t even financially driven.

It’s because Google is watching me.
